Nandi Hills

''60 kms north of Bangalore is the summer resort called Nandi Hills. Also known as Nandidurga, it was one of the summer retreats of Tipu Sultan. The 1478-m high Nandi Hills , is the source of the Penner,Ponnaiyar and Palar rivers. Around the Nandi Hills are several smaller hills which can be visited on foot.
Nandi Hills gets its name from an ancient Nandi temple situated on this hill. This temple has a thousand year old sculpture of Nandi. An ancient lord Shiva and Parvati temple also adorns this hill. It has numerous beautiful bunglows (made by Britishers) and impressive laid out gardens. ''

There are many stories about the orgin of the name Nandi Hills. During the Chola period, Nandi Hills was called Ananda Giri meaning The Hill of Happiness. Another story is that Yoga Nandeeshwara performed penance here, and so it was named after him. A temple of Yoga Nandeeshwara is situated on top of the hill. Nandi is also commonly called Nandidurga (Fort) because of the fort build here by the ruler Tippu Sultan. It is also perhaps called Nandi Hills because the hill resembles a sleeping bull (Nandi).

Nandi Hills has been a favourite picnic place for young enthusiasts on a weekend. The pleasant climate appeals to the old and the young alike. Lovers and honey mooners, in search of a quiet, beautiful place, and families on economised budget prefer Nandi Hills. Historians can find a wealth of information and the spiritual minded, peace and tranquility.

The Nandi Temple - The temple is older by more than thousand years but still has the artistic work in carving of metal and stone, much appreciated by the admirers and devotees. Made in Dravidian style of architecture, the presiding deities of the temple are Bhoga Nadishwara and Yoga Nandeeshwara.

Bheemeshwari Wildlife Sanctuary - To enjoy the holiday spree in Nandi hills with wildlife in focus, this place is all anyone could ask for.

Tipu’s Palace and Fort - Palace is although not open to visitors, the ruins of the forts could still be seen from a distance.

CLIMATE

The temperature is 25 to 28 centigrade during summer and 8 to 10 centigrade in winter. Nandi receives a rainfall of 100 to 150 cms every year.

Air: Bangalore is the nearest airport, just 65 Km before taking road route to Nandi Hills.

Rail: Nandi hills is 9 Km away from the Chikkaballapur railway station which is connected from Bangalore.

Road: Bangalore-Hyderabad National Highway is the best route to reach Nandi hills which is connected to many cities of Karnataka.
